Win A Copy of My New Book!

Thank you to all of those who entered, the contest is now closed.  Both winners were randomly selected by a number generator.  Congratulations to the two winners!  To purchase a copy of the book, please see here.

For the past year I have been sitting behind my computer most nights trying to figure out how to put into words the work we do in our classroom while writing two separate books.  Trying to figure out how I can help others go deeper with their literacy instruction, even within the 45 minute English classroom.   Trying to figure out how others could incorporate more global collaboration into their literacy instruction without it feeling like just one more thing to do.  Trying to figure out how to make the literacy instruction we all do more meaningful, more passionate, more connected.  There have been great nights and there have been early mornings.  There have been days when I have felt like the biggest fraud, imposter syndrome for the win, and others where I finally felt like what I had to write might actually be meaningful to someone else.

The past year has been grueling, but oh so incredible, and now I get to celebrate the first release of one of those books; Reimagining Literacy through Global Collaboration.   This how-to book is meant to help those that are new to global collaboration or have been dipping their toes in  for the past few years.  It is meant to inspire, meant to give you the why, and meant to help you create more meaningful literacy opportunities for your students.  It is meant to give you a glimpse into our classroom as we try to make the world smaller, kinder, and the work we do more relevant all in less than 80 pages.

The official description says:

Prepare your students to adapt and thrive in the world beyond their classroom. This how-to guide offers strategies for how to establish classrooms that give students globally connected literacy experiences. Learn why students must create school projects aimed at an authentic audience beyond school walls, and plan for more purposeful opportunities for students to engage with what they learn and create. You’ll discover how to use readily available technology tools to create environments where students gain 21st century skills, collaborate with others around the globe, and realize that their work matters.

What is my other book?

I am currently working on a new literacy book.  The book, which I am still writing, is tentatively Passionate Readers and will be published in the summer of 2017 by Routledge.  It is the tale of how I changed my literacy instruction to create passionate readers even within the 45 minute English classroom.  It is the wisdom of my amazing 7th graders and what they wish all teachers of reading would know and do.  It is how we can bring our own reading identity in and let it help us become better teachers of reading.  It is a book filled with the practical, the inspirational, and the tools we need to hopefully help our students embrace reading as part of their identity.

If you like what you read here, consider reading my book Passionate Learners – How to Engage and Empower Your Students.  Also, if you are wondering where I will be in the coming year or would like to have me speak, please see this page.

  7. Finding you, Pernille, and others through Nerdy Book Club and Twitter,
has changed my literacy beliefs and instruction tremendously. I’m thankful I’ve found my tribe who constantly improve me and my instruction by sharing what they do in their classrooms. So, thank you for continuously connecting, sharing, and improving us all globally!

  8. Hi Pernille,
I am so inspired by your blogs as well as your Global Assignments that you have shared with me. These assignments, have been as inspiration to the many teachers that I work with. As an Instructional Coach for Innovative Learning, I have shared your book as a resource, your struggles, and many accomplishements. This has allowed me to reach so many teachers who now feel like they can reach beyond their classroom walls as well. I wish you the best of luck with the book you are still writing and can’t wait to read ‘Reimagining Literacy Through Global Collaboration’.

  18. Hello Ms. Ripp, Dec. 4, 2016
As a physician, I’ve been teaching my medical students and, yes, my patients, continually for 50+years. 2 of my children, teaching K/g and Gr.4 are the recipients of articles like yours that I’ve gathered during the years of “my research on Elementary School teaching” I expended while they were in Teachers’ College. I often quote the G&S lines in one of their operettas: “Things are seldom what they seem, skim milk masquerades as cream.” And what is implied in the practice of Medicine, fits equally well in school education. Being skeptical in learning and diagnosing is precisely what I look for in “guidelines” such as yours that have surely been a superb model for them to emulate. Thank you. David L. Malek, M.D. Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

  19. You are so inspiring. GRA was an aha moment for me this year, and I can’t wait to read about more in your book! Congratulation on all of your hard work and thank you so for sharing it with all of us. Hearts.

  20. Love the blog, and always make time to read it! I don’t know where you get your energy to teach and write two books at the same time. Amazing! I would love a change for a copy of your book!

  21. Hi Pernille,
Congratulations on your new book! I can’t wait to read it. I’m moving into the library next year and am hoping to bring the outside world into the library, so I’m looking for inspiration. I’d love a copy of your book!

  22. Congratulations on your new book. I would love to win a copy of your book. I have just discovered you recently through another library worker and am enjoying your blog.

  23. Thank you for publishing your wonderful work. It is a bastion and a comfort to teachers like me. We attempted the Global Read Aloud this year, and, needless to say, it was so rewarding and so difficult, all at the same time. I am hoping to get some more advice from this new book!

  24. Hi Pernille! I am so excited to read another one of your books! You continue to be an inspiration for me as an educator and as a trailblazer with PL and global experiences with our learners. Your books have been used for PD book studies in our district. I look forward to using this one for that same purpose! Thank you for all that you are and all that you do for others each and every day!

  25. I always love learning from you. You are the teacher I wish I had next door to me, and reading your writing makes me feel like you sort of are next door. 🙂 Thank you for showing that are a real teacher, who isn’t always perfect, even if you are consistently amazing and inspiring.
