The Share a Book Initiative – New for 2014 #GRA14

I don’t think there is much that beats receiving an unexpected package .  After all, the possibility of what could be inside is tantalizing in itself.  Yet, when an unexpected package brings a new book into my hands…pure bliss.  Every year of the Global Read Aloud, people have wondered what they could to to push the connections they make further.  Usually, I stay our of their way and have shied away from doing anything official.  But this year, our 5th Global Read Aloud year, I am ready to take the plunge…

Introducing:  The Share a Book Initiative!  

Once again, it is a very simple ideas, inspired by an unexpected book arrival from Uganda.  All I am hoping (because you do not have to do this) is that once you you start to connect with your chosen school (s), you will send them a book (chapter or picture) that reflects your region, city, state, country, whatever area you choose, or somehow has a connection with where you are.  This way, your students will have to think about which book to send, and the receiving students get  a slice of what life is like where you live.  (You can even send one to me if you feel like it).

You do not have to do this.  Not everyone can or will.  But if you do, I promise it will add another layer to your connections and global understanding.  And why not spread more great books among us?  After all, books are some of the most powerful connection bringers we have, why not use them for good?

Which book should I read with my class?

New this year is the removal of grade levels.  Please read the book that you think will garner the best connections, investments, and discussions in your classroom.  Your know your group best!

 

Are the authors involved?

Yes, most of them!  I have been in touch with 3 of the 5 and will release details as soon as they are settled.  Some are more involved than others depending on how busy they are.

 

How do I get connected?

A great place to start are the Edmodo groups that have already been set up.  These are for teachers only, no students, and are meant to be a place to find people to connect with, to ask questions, and to share ideas.  The discussions have already started but will continue throughout the summer.

What’s the “Share a Book” initiative?

This year, to really bring in the global connections, I hope you will send a book representative of your area to the class (es) you connect with.  I also hope you will mail one to me if you feel like it.  The idea for this extension came from receiving a picture book from Uganda and the impact it had on my school.

 

What does this cost?

Nothing, except for the book cost, which you get yourself.  I don’t make any money off of this and there is no cost to be a part of it.

Is this truly global?

Yes!  With more than 200,000 connections made in the past 4 years, GRA is used in over 30 countries on 6 continents, with even more signed up this year.

 

Will there be merchandise?

There has been in the past, so probably yes, but I find it to be rather expensive for people to buy which is upsetting to me.  So if you have any ideas of how to make merchandise cheaper and get it to people, please contact me!

Who is behind this?

Mass consumer of incredible books, Pernille Ripp, helps students discover their superpower as a former 5th grade teacher, but now 7th grade teacher in Oregon, Wisconsin.  She loves children so much she decided to have 4 of her own with her soulmate Brandon, who keeps her laughing.   Her first book was published this May by Powerful Learning Press entitled “Passionate Learners – Giving Our Classroom Back to Our Students.” Her work has been featured by Edutopia, School Library Journal, MiddleWeb, Learning & Leading magazine, as well as in many podcasts and interviews.  She teaches others how to give the classroom back to students through webinars, as well as to anyone who walks into her classroom.

Why the Global Read Aloud Matters

Wednesday started out as a normal day at school.  I walked into the office to check my mailbox when our amazing secretary handed me a mystery package.  I immediately looked at the mailing label and was astounded when I saw this.

The package came from Cathy Kreutter, the librarian at the International School of Uganda, and she was reaching out to me continue the global connectedness started by the Global Read Aloud.   Not only was I shocked, but I was also over the moon excited, because the other thing in the package was this…

A book, written by Cathy, based on the American Folk Tale “There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly” meant to tell readers more about Uganda.  I couldn’t wait to read it to my students!  And what happened next was pure magic.

Not only did I read it my students, who couldn’t believe the things they were learning.  They also wanted to find out more about Uganda and had many questions.  Next, I took the book to our 1st grade buddies and shared it with them.  More questions and learning about Uganda happened.  Then I swung by one of our kindergarten classrooms and shared it with them, with the same result.  Within the span of an hour, 3 classes had learned and become curious about Uganda and Africa as a whole.  All through the power of a book mailed to us because of the Global Read Aloud.

Yet, the power of this book has not ended.  Our incredible librarian plans to share it next week with her classes and so we will see the seeds of curiosity planted in more kids.  More kids will find Uganda ion the globe and know a little about this faraway nation where the Nile starts and lions roar.  More kids will wonder about the world and what another child’s every day life is like.  All through the power of a shared read aloud.

So this year, for the Global Read Aloud, I will encourage people who connect to send a picture book to their partners.  A book that shares a little about them, that will deepen the connection between our homes.  I will secretly hope that some will send one to me as well so my students can see just what this project has started.

Top 10 Reasons You Should Join the Global Read Aloud #GRA14

Besides the babies we already have at our house, I have another baby; The Global Read Aloud.  The premise is simple; we pick a book to read aloud to our students during a set 6-week period and during that time we try to make as many global connections as possible.  Each teacher decides how much time they would like to dedicate and how involved they would like to be.  Some people choose to connect with just one class, while others go for as many as possible.  The scope and depth of the project is up to you.  In the past we have used Twitter, Skype, Edmodo, our wiki, email, regular mail, Kidblog, and any other tools we can think of to make these connections.  Teachers get a community of other educators to do a global project with, hopefully inspiring them to continue these connections through the year. 

So why should you join, well, let me count the ways:

  1. It is free.  There is nothing to buy besides the book, there is nothing you have to pay to be a part of it, and for free you get access to educators all over the world.
  2. It brings the world in.  Every year, educators who participate in it cannot believe how many connections they make, whether just in the US or around the world.  Having a common project provides you with a platform to start collaborating with others that you can then use the rest of the school year.
  3. You decide.  This project is great because of its simplicity, I don’t tell you how to connect or what tools to use, just which book you should be discussing.  Different teachers have different time to dedicate so this fits in with any curriculum anywhere.
  4. Students get it.  The reason I keep doing this is because my students cannot wait to hear what others think of the book we are reading.  They cannot wait to connect, they cannot wait to share, they cannot wait to reach out and learn with others.
  5. It is only 6 weeks.  We keep it short because we know how busy we all get.  6 weeks is just the right amount of time to discuss, elaborate and dissect a great book without getting overwhelmed by all of the to do’s.
  6. There is a book for your level.  Last year we expanded into two separate books, one for younger grades and one for upper grades.  This year we took it a step further and now span K through 12.  Now you truly get to pick which book you feel the most comfortable with for your students.  There is even a French version of the project for those who would rather do it in French.
  7. It provides a way to introduce tech tools.  I use the project to introduce students to Skype, KidBlog, Edmodo, Animoto and other tools.  This way I am not trying to reinvent the wheel but get to use the tools in a meaningful way with my students for their intended purposes.
  8. You get a voice.  I invite others to make it their own and share their ideas.  This is not just “my” project, it is for everyone to make their own.  I love all of the sharing and great ideas that come from being part of this project, it really sets me up for great collaboration and idea creation for the the rest of the year.
  9. You don’t have to be a techie to do it.  Sometimes technology is really overwhelming and the great thing with this project is that you don’t have to use a lot of it if you don’t want to.  You can email one other class, or even use regular mail to share observations and discussions.  However, if you are feeling adventurous, this is a great project to get your tech feet wet because there is a whole group of participants that would love to help you!
  10. It’s fun!  The biggest reason for why you should join, it is a great project!  Many teachers have embraced this project and made it their own, using it receive grants and propel their own teaching. The students love it, the books are always thought provoking and who doesn’t love a great read aloud.  So why not take something you probably already do and make it even better.

Sign up for Global Read Aloud 2014

I know it is really early but no time like the present to think about the Global Read Aloud for next year.  So if you are thinking you want to sign up, please fill out the form.  This will also add you to the Google group so that you can get updates as needed, even though it will probably be a while before I send anything out.  Also, here is your chance to give me your suggestions for next year.  Books will not be selected until May or June so that newly published books have a chance of being read and suggested.

The Global Read Aloud – How Edmodo Helped Connect 30,000 Students

On August 7th I was lucky enough to present at this year’s Edmodocon.  While I was not able to fly out there due to pregnancy complications, I was able to  be a part of this incredible event that reached more than 27,000 educators around the world.
